Fifth Year Revision - for the Christmas exam 2011


There will be a mixture of long and short questions on the Christmas exam.  Presuming the exam is one and a half hours long all chapters covered to the 1st of December will be examined.
Below is an outline of areas you must revise:

Ordnance Survey Maps and Photographs
General colours and symbols on a map
Four types of slope
Four types of settlement pattern
Four types of drainage pattern
Functions / Land use examples
Measuring distance (straight and curved)
Calculating area (regular and irregular)
Cross section
Where would you locate a....
Sketch map
Working out photograph direction

Plate tectonics
4 Layers of the earth
7 main plates
3 types of plate boundary
2 types of crust
3 main theorists and theories
3 main features (volcanoes, earthquakes and fold mountains) in F.E.E.D format.
Questions will vary from labelling, short details, drawing a diagram to longer more detailed explanations.

Rocks
An outline of this chapter is required:
3 main rock groups and their formation
2 examples from each group, their location in Ireland and uses of each.
A knowledge of the rock cycle is important.

Weathering and Erosion
An outline of this chapter is required:
3 main types of weathering
4/4/3 examples of each type of weathering
Rocks that are vulnerable to different types of weathering
A detailed knowledge of one example from each category is required.

Rock Landscapes with a focus on Limestone areas
Understanding of the main terms
Characteristics of a Karst area
Characteristics of limestone
Identify features found over ground and under ground.

Mass Movement
A brief knowledge of the three main categories of mass movement
Be prepared to identify different types of mass movement in diagrams/photos

Rivers
Knowledge of the main river terms including:
Three main stages/courses
Slope in each
Valley shape in each
Main processes in each
Main features in each
Five processes of erosion
Five types of river transport
Feature of erosion: Waterfall (F.E.E.D)
